Guang'an Temple, standing in the peaceful residential area of northern Kyoto, is an ancient temple of the Soto school boasting a history of over 670 years. It has been a stage of past wars and the spirits of warriors engraved on the ceiling still linger to this day.
The main hall's highlights are the round window called the 'window of enlightenment' and the square window called the 'window of confusion.' The round window represents the vast universe and the realm of Zen, while the square window symbolizes the struggles of life. During the autumn foliage season, the scenic views from these windows attract a bustling crowd of visitors.
The dry landscape garden viewed from the corridor resembles a landscape painting framed in a picture. The tranquil scenery with the background of Kitayama enhances the hustle and bustle of passersby.
It is conveniently located, just a short walk from the 'Takamine Gugan Temple' bus stop on the City Bus Route 6 from Kyoto Station. There are also parking lots and the Koetsu-ji Temple, allowing visitors to enjoy a leisurely visit. It is one of Kyoto's most prominent temples, attracting attention from both tourists and those seeking spiritual fulfillment.
