The Santuary of Water and Heaven in Toon City, Ehime Prefecture, is a shrine beloved by the local residents and adorned with the elegance of the four seasons. Particularly in the late autumn season, the Ginkgo trees planted in the precincts are dyed in a brilliant golden color, captivating the visitors.
The origin of the Santuary of Water and Heaven is ancient, with the oldest recorded literature dating back to the Heian period. In addition to the main shrine, the Gokoku Shrine is enshrined in the precincts, exuding the weight of history. However, it does not have an overwhelming presence. Instead, it gives a feeling of quiet dignity and a refreshing sensation brought by the changing natural scenery throughout the four seasons.
In late autumn, several Ginkgo trees planted in the precincts are dyed in a brilliant golden color, resembling a blazing sun. The fallen leaves cover the ground like a golden carpet, creating a fantastical landscape as if wandering into another world.
Among the visitors, some enjoy the soft feeling underfoot as they walk on the golden carpet, while others pick up fallen Ginkgo nuts to take home.
The Santuary of Water and Heaven is affectionately regarded by the local residents, and the ema (votive plaques) with tiger paintings created by students of the Toon High School Art Club are displayed in the precincts, emphasizing the importance of interaction with people. However, as it is a small-scale shrine, it may get crowded when many people visit.
Visiting the Santuary of Water and Heaven in late autumn, one can experience a calming feeling while standing on the golden carpet and enjoying the tranquil scenery of the shrine precincts where time flows quietly.
