Ise Shrine is a prestigious shrine that is listed in the Engishiki Jinnōchō (a registry of shrines and deities compiled in 927). As you enter the grounds, the first thing that catches your eye is the beautifully colored red torii gate, which is rare in Nara Prefecture and invites visitors into a sacred space.
The main hall was relocated from Kasuga Shrine during the Edo period and enshrines Toyuke-iri-hime-no-mikoto. The hall is adorned with abundant paintings that will surely captivate you. The grounds also house four other shrines, including Kasuga Shrine, all within the same compound.
On the fourth weekend in October every year, the autumn festival is held with a rotation system among the five neighborhoods in Yuitsuki. It is a spectacle that captures the old-fashioned charm of Nara, and it stands out as a highlight of the Yamato festivals. The large flock of egrets inhabiting the forest on the grounds enhances the sacred atmosphere.
Ise Shrine is conveniently accessed by car. There are three parking spaces on the right immediately after passing through the torii gate. Take your time to visit this shrine filled with historical romance.
