The building standing in the quiet garden of Takamatsu Castle is the Pavilion of Higashiyama Castle. During the Edo period, it was used as the residence of the feudal lord, but was demolished in the Meiji era due to aging. However, in the Taisho era, it was decided to be rebuilt at about half the original size by the Lord, Count Yoritoshi Matsudaira.
The Western-style architecture of the Pavilion of Higashiyama Castle, exuding the atmosphere of the Taisho era, has been designated as an important cultural property of the country. The interior of the building is adorned with wood carvings, exuding an elegant atmosphere. On the other hand, the dry landscape garden, constructed in 2013, was also selected as a national scenic spot, with skillful placement of granite, pines, and trees.
Currently, the Pavilion of Higashiyama Castle is owned by the city of Takamatsu and is used for events such as tea ceremonies, concerts, and photo sessions. It will be a good opportunity to experience the culture of Kagawa while strolling through the historic building and garden. There are also small cafes and souvenirs, providing a space to relax and unwind.
