In Nara Prefecture, there exist rare settlements called "Kango-settlement" where the lifestyle from ancient times still remains. Among them, Heguri Kango-settlement is the largest and best-preserved attraction. Let's explore the charm of this settlement while feeling the weight of history.
Heguri Kango-settlement is a settlement characterized by moats and embankments surrounding homes. In the past, it also served a defensive role, but since the Edo period, it has mainly been used as an agricultural waterway. Walking through the winding alleys, you can fully enjoy the atmosphere of the houses reflected on the water's surface.
This place is considered to be the birthplace of "Heguri Are" mentioned in the Nihon Shoki. Heguri Are is an important figure who is said to have greatly contributed to the cultural development of Nara as a god of wisdom and learning. The Udai Shrine standing within the settlement is known as a place where the deity is enshrined.
Since narrow alleys restrict access to cars, walking is recommended for exploring the area. While enjoying the traditional townscape, you may also come across the "Shichimawari," a warding-off-evil path that twists seven times. Depending on the season, the scenery along the moat also changes. Why not immerse yourself in the slow passage of time and reflect on the history of this place?
