Place of worship • 3-chōme-3-8 Nishinippori, Arakawa City, Tokyo 116-0013, Japan
Nestled in Nishinippori, Arakawa Ward, Yofukuji offers a serene space away from the noise of the city. Founded in 1620, this Shingon-sect Toyoyama branch temple has over 400 years of history. Surrounded by trees, the temple grounds exude a calm atmosphere as if time has stood still.
One of Yofukuji’s highlights is its majestic red Nio Gate. Said to have been built sometime between 1704 and 1711, this gate welcomes visitors with an imposing presence. Inside the gate, statues of the guardian deities Koumokuten and Tamonten protect those who come to visit. According to legend, these Nio statues were crafted by the renowned Kamakura-period sculptor Unkei, though their authenticity remains uncertain.
Yofukuji also has deep ties with cultural figures from the Edo period. The temple grounds are dotted with haiku monuments dedicated to poets from the Danrin school, including Nishiyama Soin. Monuments like the Baio Kadan-Hai and the memorial of Kashiwa-no-Jotei convey the literary fragrance of the past, making them treasures not to be missed by literature enthusiasts.
Another charm of Yofukuji is the natural beauty that changes with each season. In spring, the double cherry blossoms color the temple grounds, delighting visitors’ eyes. In early summer, the crepe myrtle blooms vividly, adding rich hues to the tranquil environment.
Yofukuji is about a 10-minute walk from Nishinippori Station on the JR Yamanote Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line. Nearby, you can also find Suwa Shrine and Jokouji Temple, and from Fujimizaka slope, you can imagine the once-visible view of Mount Fuji (unfortunately no longer visible today). A small walking route around these spots is recommended for a leisurely stroll.
As Yofukuji is an active temple, please behave quietly during your visit to avoid disturbing other worshippers. Photography is allowed for exteriors, but please refrain from photographing inside the main hall and altars. Additionally, please take any garbage home with you to help keep the temple grounds beautiful.
Yofukuji offers a rare place in bustling Tokyo where one can feel the weight of history and the tranquility of time standing still. The majestic Nio Gate, the scent of literature, and the beauty of the seasons create a unique atmosphere that heals visitors' hearts and provides a step away from the ordinary. When visiting Arakawa Ward, be sure to explore this hidden historical gem and experience a moment of serene peace.
