Place of worship • Iwai-84 Aiuchi, Goshogawara, Aomori 037-0401, Japan
Just a little off the center of Goshogawara City, you will find the Sanbō-Hie-jinja Shrine. It starts with a large torii gate along the national highway, and as you proceed along the approach, you will find the precincts surrounded by a forest of cedar trees. Following the moss-covered stone-paved path, you will reach a sacred area with the atmosphere of an ancient temple.
This place was once a major religious facility of the Ando clan, who ruled over the Tsugaru thirteen lakes. The traces of the Aun-ji Temple still remain within the precincts. It was a tragic temple that was burned down by the Nanbu clan in the Muromachi period, but it still conveys the remnants of its advanced culture.
As you proceed along the approach, you will be enveloped in a solemn atmosphere. As a power spot in the forest, you may feel a mysterious presence lingering about. The sudden change in weather and the feeling of awe both tell the sanctity of this place.
From a corner of the precincts, you can clearly see the rock-solid Mount Iwaki, known as the Tsugaru-Fuji, and encounter the magnificent natural landscape. After finishing your visit in a calm mood, it is also recommended to take a leisurely break at a panoramic café at the foot of the mountain.
Stepping into the sacred realm of the mountain, one feels as if they have wandered into a different world transcending time. Please be sure to experience this mysterious space created by history and nature.
