“Udatsu Townscape” located in the center of Mino City, Gifu Prefecture, retains the rich traces of the Edo period. The typical architectural style of merchant houses that flourished with Mino Japanese paper production is still superbly preserved.
“Udatsu” refers to the fireproof wall between neighboring houses. Only wealthy merchant houses could afford to build them high, hence the saying “can’t raise the udatsu,” which means not being able to prosper. The udatsu standing in Mino’s townscape are historical witnesses of past prosperity.
The landscape without utility poles, with black-lacquered houses lined up against the backdrop of mountains, resembles a set from a period drama. Visitors can feel as if they have slipped back to the Edo period in the leisurely flow of time.
While strolling through the town, looking for traditional crafts and souvenirs made of Mino Japanese paper is also a delight. The delicate paper products made by local craftsmen are perfect for travel memories.
The “Udatsu Townscape” is a precious tourist spot that condenses the history and culture of Mino. It's a historical jewel that Gifu Prefecture boasts, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of traditional Japanese townscapes. Why not stroll leisurely and feel the breath of Edo period merchants?
