Transcending Time - The History of Jorinja Shrine

Jorinja Shrine, located in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a historic shrine with origins dating back to the early 8th century during the construction of Jorin-no-Korogaki. As the second shrine of Dewa Province, it has served as a spiritual mainstay for the region.

The Historical Stage

The shrine's location is between the northern end and the northeastern corner of the northern gate of Jorin-no-Korogaki. This site was carefully chosen by ancient people to defend against invasions from the Emishi, showcasing the historical significance of Jorinja Shrine as the protector of Jorin-no-Saku.

Waves of Prosperity and Decline

Throughout its long history, Jorinja Shrine has experienced multiple waves of prosperity and decline. During the Warring States period, it fell into ruin due to conflict but was later restored in the Edo period with the support of the Shonai clan lords. Beyond the Meiji period, it overcame numerous disasters, lasting to the present day.

Traditions Living in the Present

Since 1977, local children have been performing the Mikomai dance, a tradition that continues to this day. This dance plays an important role in passing the shrine's history and regional culture to future generations.

Tips for Visitors

• Access to the shrine is somewhat difficult by car, so it is recommended to walk from the Jorin-no-Saku site.
• If you wish to receive a goshuin (seal stamp), it is advised to contact in advance as there may not always be a priest available.
• The shrine grounds are relatively small, but visitors can enjoy a quiet and calm atmosphere.
