The hidden weight of history in Gifu, the remains of Kiri-tori Jinya

The remains of Kiri-tori Jinya stand in a residential area of Gifu City. This place has a long history. In 1339 during the Northern and Southern Courts period, Toki Yoritaka, the Shugo (governor) of Mino Province, built Nagamori Castle and became its lord. However, in 1353, the castle became cramped, and the main base was moved to Kawate Castle. After that, the Toki clan used Kawate Castle as their stronghold.

For a long time, it was an abandoned castle, but in 1803, Ando Shigenari built Kiri-tori Jinya. The Ando clan ruled this area, and after the Meiji Restoration, it became part of Kasamatsu Prefecture.

Now, it is a historic site standing quietly in a corner of a peaceful residential area, but if you walk through the narrow streets, you can catch a glimpse of the former castle town. Why not visit here and ponder the history as you walk?

The charm of the quietly standing castle remains

The remains of Kiri-tori Jinya are located in an inconspicuous place and do not feel lively. However, this is where the real charm lies.

As you walk, you can see remnants of stone walls and dry moats, and sense the presence of the former castle. And the surrounding quietness allows you to feel the weight of history.

It is not well known as a tourist spot, but that's a good thing. You can take a leisurely stroll and contemplate the weight of time.
