Located in Fuses, Tottori City, Sannokuma Hiyoshi Shrine is an attractive spot where the history of the Muromachi period overlaps with an ancient sacred site. This shrine, seated on the hilltop of Fuse's Kofun, was requested by the Yamanaka family, guardians of Inaba Province, and boasts a distinguished history.
When it comes to Hiyoshi Shrine, it's all about the monkeys! Adorable monkey statues are positioned throughout the grounds, almost like guides for the shrine. The chozuya also has a playful feature where water flows from a monkey's mallet.
The banners in the Honden depicting the Heike butterfly crest tell of the shrine's deep ties with the Heike clan, reminiscent of the first chapter of 'The Tale of the Heike', 'The Monk's Petition'. This point is sure to ignite the curiosity of history enthusiasts.
At the shrine office, you can receive two types of goshuin featuring parent-child monkeys and a monkey wearing an eboshi. Both are so attractive that it’s hard to choose. They are perfect for making memories of your visit.
Take a bus from Yoshioka Onsen to Fuse Bus Stop, and a 10-minute walk will bring you to the shrine. Nearby, you can also visit Fuse's Kofun and Amahohi no Mikami Shrine, which are recommended to tour together. The wide parking lot also makes it convenient for visits by car.
Sannokuma Hiyoshi Shrine's distinctive atmosphere, combining history, culture, and charming monkeys, makes it a hidden gem worth visiting in Tottori. Why not pay a visit?
