Located in Hashima-gun, Gifu Prefecture, the Ginan-cho Historical and Folklore Museum is a small museum that introduces the local history and culture. However, its rich and charming contents are worthy of being called a hidden gem.
Established in the 1970s by local residents, this museum allows visitors to learn about the rural lifestyle that has continued since the Edo period. The exhibition space, utilizing old folk houses, is filled with various daily necessities, agricultural implements, and handcrafted items from that time.
Walking through the museum feels like traveling through time to the past of Ginan-cho. From exhibits that recreate the equipment for silk reeling and the scenes of agricultural work, the efforts and wisdom of our predecessors are conveyed. There are also special exhibitions showcasing the independent research projects of schoolchildren, vividly depicting the local way of life.
The former Miyakawa residence is a relocated mansion from the Meiji era, allowing visitors to experience the townhouse construction process of that time. In the medicinal herb garden, you can see the herbs that were once planted in the garden. If you're lucky, you may have the chance to hear historical and anecdotal stories from volunteer guides. After a leisurely stroll, there is a cafe space serving light snacks made from local ingredients, offering a relaxing time. The Ginan-cho Historical and Folklore Museum is truly a hidden gem of Gifu. We invite you to stop by and experience the depth of Gifu's rural culture.
