To travelers visiting the ancient city of Nikkō
Nikkō Tōshō-gū is a historic shrine heritage dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Within its grounds lies the Nikkō Tōshō-gū Treasure House, where numerous treasures passed down in the Tokugawa family are gathered.
Upon entry, visitors are immediately greeted by the portable shrine of Ieyasu and the splendid and magnificent swords. The dignified appearance of the Nanban Gusoku used in the Battle of Sekigahara is awe-inspiring. Additionally, giant crane incense burners and beautiful calligraphy and paintings are exhibited, evoking the exquisite craftsmanship and elegance of the Tokugawa family.
It is recommended to stroll the grounds after visiting the Treasure House, as you can purchase an admission ticket to Tōshō-gū at the same time. Here, you can enjoy the unique national treasure Yōmeimon Gate and the superb view from Sanjinko, among other scenic beauties distinctive to Nikkō. If you spend leisurely time, you should be able to feel the dignity and romance nurtured by history.
Approximately 140km northeast of Tokyo Station, it takes about 2 hours on the Tobu Nikkō Line. The Treasure House is about a 15-minute walk from JR Nikkō Station, with parking available on the grounds. Nearby, there are souvenir shops offering quality Nikkō specialties and coffee shops such as Ueshima Coffee, allowing you to leisurely savor the afterglow. In the seasons of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, the grounds are filled with color, and lively events are held.
