Suwa City Art Museum - A Silent Space to Feel the Essence of Art

The Hall of Art where Tradition and Modernity Intersect

The Suwa City Art Museum is a historic building located in the heart of Suwa Onsen. Built in 1943, this two-story wooden building is covered inside and out with concrete walls, beautifully integrating Japanese and Western architectural styles. Its appearance by the shores of Lake Suwa exudes the unique scenic beauty of Suwa.

The World of Sculpture Housing the Soul of Sohei Horiguchi

The museum features permanent exhibitions of works by Sohei Horiguchi, a representative sculptor of Japan. Horiguchi's works are carved with the deep emotions of humanity, casting a strong message to the hearts of the viewers. Confronting sculpture in the silence, you will experience a blissful time of touching the essence of art.

An Enjoyable Break with a Little Playfulness

When visiting the museum, be sure to check the opening hours of the nearby famous spot, the Katakura Museum. If the Katakura Museum is not open yet, it's also enjoyable to spend a little time in this art museum. While being overwhelmed by the powerful sculpture works, don't forget to maintain a little playfulness during the visit, which may allow you to touch the soul of the works more deeply.

It's very small and there aren't many exhibits, but I happened to fall in love with the work. We recommend checking out the exhibits before going.

It's a fun spot to see with friends. However, the statue on the first floor may make some people uneasy.

I visited several museums in Suwa (Sanritsu Hattori, Yasuharu Harada), but this one was the best for me. Sculptures by Munehide Hosokawa were on display. I didn't know anything about Munehide Hosokawa, but it seemed like he was trying to convey something, and for the first time I felt the power of his sculptures.
