Located in the heart of Tokyo, there's a place where you can feel a sense of stillness and the weight of history as if time has stopped. This place is Rinko-ji Temple in Taito Ward's Yanaka. Established in the early Edo period, this temple serves as a rare reminder of Edo aesthetics in modern Tokyo.
Rinko-ji was originally established beside Shinobazu Pond but was relocated to its current site in 1681. It's affiliated with the Rinzai sect's Daitoku-ji faction, and its principal image is Shakyamuni Buddha. The temple is also known for housing the tomb of mid-Edo Confucian scholar Kumpei Gamou, making it a beloved spot for history enthusiasts.
The greatest charm of Rinko-ji lies in its distinctive atmosphere created by its silence and desolate scenery. Few visitors frequent this temple, allowing you to feel a slow passage of time, as if you've slipped back into the Edo period.
