Tourist attraction • Ryugatakemachi Takado, Kamiamakusa, Kumamoto 866-0202, Japan
Hikariiwa stands on the land of Amakusa. At first glance, it seems like just a rock of unusual shape, but in fact, its formation embodies the arts of nature and the passage of time. This rock was formed from lava created by volcanic activity approximately 6 million years ago and was later sculpted into a rare shape by the process of weathering. Like a stone sculpture left behind by a time traveler, Hikariiwa exudes a mysterious atmosphere where the past and present intersect.
However, the charm of Hikariiwa is not only in its peculiar appearance. This rock is imbued with legends that the people of Amakusa have inherited for a long time. It is said that long ago, a dragon descended from the sky and rested on this rock, coiling its tail around it. This is why the place is named “Dragon Mountain”. Moreover, due to its shape, it is also called the “Couple Rocks”, embodying a legend symbolizing the bond of a couple. This place is enveloped in a mythical romance that blends the workings of nature with the beliefs of the people.
Hikariiwa is located in Takato, Ryugadake-cho, Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture. When accessing by car, take the prefectural road branching off from National Route 389 and walk approximately 10 minutes from there. There is also a parking lot, making it a convenient sightseeing spot to visit. Nearby, there are trekking courses and campsites where you can fully enjoy the nature of Amakusa. In addition to admiring the peculiar rocks, it is also attractive to enjoy activities unique to Amakusa. Why not savor a time that can only be found here, while gazing at the contrast between the light shining through the skylight and the exquisite shape of the rocks?
