Located in Seika Town, Soraku District, Kyoto Prefecture, Kasuga Shrine is a mystical sacred place enveloped in the timeless history and rich nature. It is said to have been separated from Kasuga Taisha in Nara at the beginning of the Heian period, and has long been cherished as the center of faith for the local people.
The main hall, ridge tag, and former torii beam head of Kasuga Shrine are designated as Important Cultural Properties by the nation. Unfortunately, you cannot view these cultural properties up close, but their mere existence speaks volumes about the historical value of the shrine. From the worship hall, you can feel the deep faith of the predecessors.
The compact but orderly precincts feature skillfully arranged lanterns and trees, creating a sense of depth. Passing through the torii gate, you are welcomed by a path covered with trees, enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere. In the ever-changing nature with the seasons, you can experience a heart-cleansing experience.
The main hall is not in the typical Kasuga-zukuri style but is built in the rare Irimoya-zukuri style. The elegant curves that can be felt from even a part of the roof are pleasing to the eyes of the beholders. Moreover, the openwork carvings of Chinese lions and peonies on the trellis of the purification pavilion convey the craftsmanship of late Edo period artisans.
Every year on January 10th, the 'Bow-Starting Ritual' praying for a bountiful harvest is held. The sight of shooting arrows towards the auspicious direction is a precious opportunity to pass down ancient traditions to the present day. The sound of the bowstring is believed to have an exorcism effect, echoing in the ears of the worshippers.
The precincts are open 24 hours a day, but you cannot tour the interior of the main hall for cultural property protection. There are 5-6 parking spaces in front of the torii gate, but during busy times, consideration is needed to avoid inconveniencing nearby residents.
