Hinokuma Shrine quietly stands in the mountainous region of Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture. Its history is ancient, being recognized as one of the 'Gen Ise' (Original Ise) shrines. As you proceed along the approach, the dignified shrine that emerges through the trees exudes an undeniable majesty.
Hinokuma Shrine is a shrine with a long history dating back to the late Heian period. Within the precincts, three torii gates, restored with ancient materials bestowed from Ise Grand Shrine in 1965, stand solemnly. The impressive rope-tied torii gate also captures the eye, enveloping the worshippers in a solemn atmosphere.
To reach Hinokuma Shrine, it is necessary to walk along a mountain path for about 20 minutes from Oomiwa Shrine. The narrow and rugged journey also becomes a valuable experience. The shrine standing in the midst of nature allows one to immerse in a pure and serene atmosphere, free from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The enshrined deity at Hinokuma Shrine is the younger soul of Amaterasu-omi-kami. Each part of the precinct is filled with a long history and traditions. Throughout the year, rituals are conducted and carefully handed down by the local people. During the annual festival, the joy of the festival fills the silent forest.
Hinokuma Shrine is a supreme space to feel nature and cleanse one's heart. From the shrine quietly standing deep in the forest, one may have the opportunity to feel the compassion of the ancient gods.
