Kannon Temple, located in Taito-ku, Tokyo, stands amidst streets that still retain the rich atmosphere of Edo. Since its founding in 1611, this temple has amassed over 400 years of history. It has been cherished and preserved as a place of solace for people from the Edo period to the present day.
Kannon Temple’s charm also lies in its historical significance. Known as a temple connected with the Ako Ronin, it became a meeting place for the Ronin due to the familial connection between the temple's abbot at the time and the brothers Chikamatsu Kanroku and Okuda Sadaemon. To this day, the memorial tower for the Ako Ronin still stands in the temple, conveying the spirit of samurai from the Edo period.
The grounds of Kannon Temple are enveloped in tranquility that makes one forget the city’s hustle and bustle. Grand camphor trees, seasonal flowers, and the sound of wind chimes create a soothing atmosphere for visitors. Especially in the summer, the refreshing sound of wind chimes resonates throughout the grounds, allowing one to feel the Edo atmosphere.
At Kannon Temple, one can receive rare Sanskrit Goshuin as well as seasonal Goshuin resembling cut-out art. Additionally, the temple offers a unique style of Goshuin where visitors can have their wishes inscribed. There are even Goshuin decorated with Swarovski crystals, making for a special memento.
While preserving tradition, Kannon Temple also undertakes initiatives to meet contemporary needs. For instance, it offers tree burial sites as a new form of memorial service. This can be considered an innovative approach addressing the demands of urban dwellers.
Kannon Temple is about a 10-minute walk from JR Yamanote Line’s Nippori Station. The temple is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During your visit, you can purchase Goshuin and incense at the building on the left side of the main hall. Please remember to be considerate of other visitors to maintain a quiet environment.
