Komagatake is the iconic peak of Hakone. Looking at aerial photographs taken shortly after the end of World War II, at that time there were no man-made structures, only a natural landscape covered with lush trees. There were probably only a few climbers who came for the purpose of faith.
However, since the opening of the Komagatake Ropeway in 1957, the Komagatake Skating Center in 1958, and the Komagatake Cable Car in 1963, Komagatake has become an easily accessible mountain. In 1964, the Hakone Motomiya was also built, and Komagatake enjoyed its heyday as the center of tourism.
Currently, the skating center and cable car are closed, and the former bustle has disappeared, allowing for a more peaceful atmosphere. By taking the ropeway, you can enjoy a panoramic view of mountains including Mount Fuji, Lake Ashi, and Suruga Bay. The sunset, especially during the beautiful time, is a must-see.
However, due to volcanic activity, hiking is difficult. Make sure to take adequate cold weather precautions and take the ropeway to the top. Komagatake, with its weight of history and stunning views, can be said to be a representative tourist spot in Hakone.
