Historical landmark • 62 Keihokushimoutsuchō, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 601-0266, Japan
The Utsujo-ato site stands in the quiet residential area of Ukyo Ward, Kyoto. This place is where Akechi Mitsuhide fought his last battle in the Sengoku period. The stone walls and moat marks are still preserved, allowing people to reminisce about the past.
Progressing along the vertical moats from the shrine precincts, you will arrive in the midst of a cedar forest. Climbing the steep mountain trails from there, the main enclosure's tiger mouth will come into view. As there are many precarious places, it is recommended to bring trekking poles.
Heading north from the main enclosure, you will find a succession of terraces. The terraces erected along the cut slopes exude the unique castle culture of Kyoto. Further inside, moat marks remain, allowing people to recall the scenes of past attacks and defenses.
This castle site is recommended for those who are fascinated by historical romance. Although climbing the steep mountain trails may be a bit challenging, the joy upon arrival is exceptional. While imagining the history of the fallen castle, why not savor the vestiges of the past?
