Onomichi City offers the experience of the picturesque Seto Inland Sea. Zentoku-ji Temple, located on one of its small islands, is a space enveloped in timeless history and tranquility, almost like a different world.
Crossing the bridge and passing through the torii gate, it feels like entering an ancient temple. Walking along the mossy approach, the vermilion main hall catches the eye. The presence of the hall, rumored to have been established in 1335, exudes a profound sense of history.
While the main hall serves as a vacant monks' quarters, regular ceremonies are conducted. The lingering aroma of incense and the chanting of sutras resonate through the tranquil grounds. Surrendering to the leisurely flow of time, the hustle and bustle of the present world starts to fade away.
Visitors can also enjoy the splendid views of the Seto Inland Sea from the temple grounds. The tranquil sea dotted with islands, set against the backdrop of the blue sky, forms a mesmerizing picture. The sunrise and sunset views are particularly remarkable.
Zentoku-ji Temple is located on a small island away from Honshu, and access by boat is common. Regular boats depart from the Onibaba-Oki pier, which is about a 10-minute walk from Onomichi Station. While accommodations on the island are limited, day trips from accommodations in Onomichi City are also possible. Exploring the rich natural beauty of the island is highly recommended.
Zentoku-ji Temple is like a small gem in the Seto Inland Sea. Amidst the stillness that seems to have stopped time, one can enjoy a memorable meditative experience.
