Tourist attraction • Shitooke, Kikai, Oshima District, Kagoshima 891-6143, Japan
Kikai Island, a small island at the southwestern end of Japan. In the village of Shitobe on the west side, there is a mysterious lake where the only native Hasunohagiri blooms. The transparent and rich cobalt blue water surface reflects the deep blue sky, creating a beauty like a painting.
In the middle of the lake, a deserted island floats, enveloping the entire lake in a mysterious atmosphere. Although you can reach the island by boat, landing is restricted due to nature conservation. Just gazing at the island's shadow from the lake is an extraordinary experience.
The peak season for admiring the lake is from mid-July to early August, when the flowers of Hasunohagiri bloom throughout. The vibrant green mountains and the deep cobalt blue create a beautiful contrast, and it is recommended to stroll along the lakeside with a camera. From time to time, the sound of wild birds can be heard from the grove, adding to the allure of this place.
It takes about 2 and a half hours by regular ferry from Amami Oshima. There are hotels and guesthouses scattered throughout the town of Kikai. Staying in a local guesthouse allows you to enjoy interaction with the island's residents. For those who want to fully enjoy nature, using the campsite is also recommended.
The northernmost natural gem of Japan, please be sure to visit and experience its mysterious beauty.
