Silently standing in Komatsushima City, Tokushima Prefecture is 'Flag Mountain'. This small hill is known as a place related to the famous figure in Japanese history, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. It’s legend that during the Genpei War, Yoshitsune set a white flag here to boost the morale of his troops, which is the origin of this place's name.
Upon reaching the summit of Flag Mountain, the first sight is the imposing equestrian statue of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The size and grandeur of the statue impress visitors, reminiscent of Yoshitsune riding through the battlefield across 800 years.
In addition to the statue of Yoshitsune, Flag Mountain is home to Hachiman Shrine, Oji Shrine, and Myoken Shrine. Each shrine exudes a unique aura, creating a mystical space where history and faith intersect.
Unfortunately, Flag Mountain lacks a dedicated parking lot. Cars must be parked in nearby open spaces, so please be considerate of local residents. Additionally, the steps to the summit are quite steep. Those with limited physical strength, elderly or those with young children need to take extra care.
Several places related to Yoshitsune are scattered throughout Komatsushima City. Touring them along with Flag Mountain recreates the experience of the Genpei War stage. Additionally, the nearby coastline offers serene views of the Seto Inland Sea.
At first glance, Flag Mountain seems just a small hill. However, it bears a piece of Japan’s history. With the heroic presence of Yoshitsune, the three shrines, and the surrounding rural scenery, this view deeply imprints visitors' hearts.
