Located in Nosu Town of Usuki City, Fugen Temple is an esteemed temple of the Rinzai sect Myoshinji school. It was established in 1294 by Inaba no Kami Chikanao, the son of Otomo Chikashu. Inspired by a divine dream of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, it was founded by Zen Master Gakuan. Though it fell into disrepair for a period, it was restored to its current location in 1647. Since then, it has played a critical role as a center of local faith and cultural transmission.
Also known as 'Momiji Temple,' Fugen Temple is renowned for its vibrant autumn foliage that blankets the grounds in reds and golds. Mid to late November is the best time to visit, when the mix of green, yellow, and red creates a beautiful landscape. While the daytime view is spectacular, the evening illuminations add an enchanting atmosphere.
The temple houses the grave of the first Hirota Kichiuemon, the model for the Oita folk tale
