Nestled in the deep mountains of Tokushima Prefecture, Yakuoji is known as the 12th site on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. After passing through steep mountain paths, a solemn temple shrouded in silence appears. Said to be founded by the revered priest Kukai in the early Heian period, Yakuoji has survived through forest fires to this day.
The temple grounds of Yakuoji are surrounded by lush nature, creating a unique atmosphere. Passing through the gate, a stone-paved path extends, flanked by ancient trees. The main hall and Daishido are built to blend seamlessly into the mountainside, achieving perfect harmony between nature and architecture. Especially alluring are the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves, offering stunning views throughout the year.
Access to Yakuoji is not easy. After climbing mountain paths, a 10-minute walk from the parking lot leads to the main hall. This journey can be seen as a form of training. Despite gravel paths and stairs that present footing challenges, the sense of accomplishment upon arrival is unparalleled.
As with other sacred sites, Yakuoji offers temple stamping. For 500 yen, visitors can receive a temple stamp at the Nokeijo. An intriguing feature is the choice between color or black and white impressions (osugata). This unique service of Yakuoji melds traditional culture with modern elements.
The charm of Yakuoji varies with the seasons.
Driving is the common way to access Yakuoji, though the roads are narrow. In winter, snow tires are recommended due to possible snowfall. The spacious parking lot is well maintained but requires a fee of 500 yen.
Yakuoji is not merely a tourism destination but a sacred site on a journey of the heart, continuing to captivate many. Crossing rigorous mountain paths and spending time in the tranquil grounds offer a precious opportunity to detach from daily life and contemplate oneself. At Yakuoji, where history, nature, and faith intertwine, experience a cleansing journey for the spirit.
