Izumo is known as one of the leading areas of ancient culture in Japan and preserves many historical sites. Among them, the "Tsukayama Kofun" is particularly noteworthy. This is because this late-stage tumulus, built around the middle of the 6th century, stands in the middle of the residential area.
The Tsukayama Kofun is located in a quiet residential area of Izumo city. It appears somewhat isolated, surrounded by houses, apartments, and parking lots. It is clear that the stone chamber of that time is being well preserved. If you peek into the gap of the cage, you will feel the deep ancient atmosphere.
Perhaps some people ran around in the neighborhood since they were children. For such people, the surprise of realizing that their playground is actually a tumulus cannot be underestimated. However, this is not impossible. While it is unusual for tumuli to be preserved in urban areas, it is rather common in Izumo.
When you see the Tsukayama Kofun, you will realize that Izumo is dotted with remains of the ancient everywhere. Cycling around the city, you will come across tumuli, stone chambers, and cave-dwelling one after another. A leisurely trip, feeling the breath of ancient times, is truly the embodiment of ancient romance.
