The rocks in the stone walls of Osaka Castle are remnants of those that were requisitioned and transported by various feudal lords. However, there are also stones that could not reach the castle for various reasons, and these are called 'Zannenseki.' This article introduces the charm of touching the thoughts of the feudal lords, the origin of this mysterious name, and searching for the family crests carved on the stones.
Many stones were needed for the reconstruction of Osaka Castle, which was destroyed in the Summer Siege of Osaka. Various feudal lords were ordered to requisition the stones by Dainagon Kojoshojaku, and they worked tirelessly to transport the stones from their respective domains. However, many stones were unable to reach the castle due to accidents and natural disasters during transportation.
Even now, 'Zannenseki' remains in a corner of Osaka Castle. Two stones from Shikoku Island were originally destined to be used in the castle, but they were left neglected. Thanks to the efforts of the Young Men's Association, they were transported to Osaka, ensuring that the past events were preserved.
The 'Zannenseki' have family crests of the feudal lords carved on them. It is as if the thoughts of the feudal lords who survived the chaotic era are engraved in the stones. Imagining the people who risked their lives in battles in old Osaka based on the family crests is an experience unique to this place.
When visiting Osaka, why not take a look at the 'Zannenseki'? You should be able to feel the weight of history as you unravel the stories hidden in the stones.
