The Northern Enclosure of Yoshinogari Ruins is known as the political and religious center of the Yayoi period. Comparable to modern-day Kasumigaseki, this site was the most important and sacred place for people of that time. Let's embark on a journey to the political hub of approximately 2,000 years ago.
The Northern Enclosure has nine buildings reconstructed with the pinnacle of architectural techniques of the time. Among them, the distinguished ritual hall stands out, showcasing the advanced technological skills of the Yayoi people.
Inside the largest building, rituals of the time are recreated. This space was special, accessible only to the chosen few. Viewing the exhibited figures conveys the mysterious atmosphere of the era.
Decorations of migratory birds adorn the buildings and gates. These served as talismans to ward off evil, though their historical accuracy is not whole. Drawing inspiration from the Korean Peninsula, they are recreated with abundant imagination, offering a joyful side of unraveling historical mysteries.
The accuracy of the reconstructed buildings sparks debate among history enthusiasts. However, by applying imagination with a curiosity of “maybe it was like this,” the visit becomes even more enjoyable.
As a political and religious hub of the Yayoi period, the Northern Enclosure tells us a lot. Even if not perfectly reconstructed, it serves as a clue for imagining the life and culture of that time, rightfully called a treasure of Japan. Visit and enjoy a time trip back to the Yayoi era!
