Mount Kokimi, not far from the city, is a natural hiking spot that can be easily reached from Nara City. While walking on relatively gentle mountain trails, you can leisurely enjoy the scenery of Nara. From the mountaintop, you can overlook the Nara Basin and even the cityscape of Osaka in the distance, offering a magnificent view.
The popular route to Mount Kokimi starts from Gokoku Shrine, walking through the village of Tahara for about 10 km. After paying a visit to the Jizo statue at Hachibuse Pass and passing through the road next to the heliport, you will arrive at the village of Tahara. Passing through the Spring Palace Shrine at the outskirts of this village, you will reach the trailhead.
Most of the mountain trails are paved with concrete and there are hardly any steep or dangerous spots. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the mountaintop. This is an easy route that even young children can climb without getting out of breath.
Upon reaching the mountaintop, you can sit on a bench and enjoy the view of Nara. The scenery of the Nara Basin spread out on the west side is an epitome of breathtaking views. It is also one of the highlights of this mountain to see the distant cityscape of Osaka.
Hiking is recommended for visiting Mount Kokimi. A round trip from Gokoku Shrine takes about 5 hours, allowing you to enjoy moderate exercise and stunning views. If you go by car, it is best to park in Tahara Village or near the trailhead. Why not visit this small hidden gem on a sunny day?
