The thousands of Buddha statues at Mount Shinzan in Oga City, Akita Prefecture are a hidden gem that astonishes visitors. At first glance, it seems like an ordinary small hall, but upon entering, you are overwhelmed by the sight of around 12,000 wooden Jizo statues filling the walls and ceilings.
In 1714 (Shōtoku 4), Monk Fumyo of Kofuji Temple carved these statues to memorialize his beloved disciple and to pray for the children who passed away at a young age. Each small statue, about 20 cm in size, is imbued with 300 years of history and the prayers of the people.
Upon entering the hall, the sight of countless Buddha statues in the dimly lit space is awe-inspiring. The statues, illuminated by natural light from the entrance, stand quietly, calming the hearts of visitors and leading them into deep meditation.
