Place of worship • 3251-4 Moji, Moji Ward, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka 801-0855, Japan
Mojiko is home to the only Burmese-style temple in Japan. The construction of this building, called the World Peace Pagoda, is derived from the sad history of Mojiko being a port that sent the most soldiers to the southern front line.
This white stupa was completed in 1958 by the designer, Kanichi Shirai. The magnificent 40-meter-high tower faithfully reproduces the traditional Burmese architectural style. It is currently inhabited by Burmese monks who pray for peace every day.
The origin of the pagoda's construction is marked by the tragic experiences of many Japanese soldiers who died in the muddy southern front line in what was then Burma. It represents the hope of calming the souls of the soldiers who made Mojiko their final resting place, and the wish to never repeat the same mistakes.
The World Peace Pagoda stands on the hill of Morooka Park, a bit far from public transportation. However, once you visit, you will be surrounded by an exotic atmosphere as if you were visiting Myanmar. Occasionally, you may see travelers and photographers in the area.
A proud sanctuary of Mojiko that learns from history and seeks peace. Why not visit this place and feel the prayers for peace that reside here?
