Place of worship • Takimatadani Keihokuhosonocho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 601-0262, Japan
In the deep mountains of Kyoto's Ukyo Ward lies an astonishing treasury of stone Buddhas. The Stone Buddha Group of Takimata is a tranquil sanctuary protected by local residents, where the harmony between nature and man-made beauty is beautifully realized.
Mr. Norihiko Yotsuji from Keihoku spent over ten years carving 42 stone Buddhas on his own mountain. These stone Buddhas are not just sculptures but are testimonies of Mr. Yotsuji’s life, providing deep inspiration to those who visit.
Many visitors are amazed by the scale that far exceeds their imagination. Even more surprising is that this wonderful place is completely open to the public for free. Including the well-maintained parking lot, everything is free, making it a gift to its visitors.
Access to the stone Buddha group includes both paved roads and unpaved mountain paths. To walk comfortably, it is recommended to wear hiking-appropriate clothing and shoes. Taking a leisurely tour can take about 1.5 to 2 hours, so it’s best to visit with ample time.
Near the stone Buddha group is the beautiful Takimata Waterfall. Visiting both allows for enjoying the contrast between natural and man-made beauty. However, the path to the waterfall is more rugged and requires proper equipment.
The Stone Buddha Group of Takimata is an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of Kyoto and spend quiet moments of self-reflection. Each stone Buddha tells a story that can calm the soul amidst nature. Though not a dazzling tourist spot, it offers a profoundly memorable experience.
There is a large parking lot right before the Keihoku Tunnel along Route 162. From here, it’s a 20-minute walk to the stone Buddha group. The existence of the parking lot is easy to miss, so please be cautious.
The Stone Buddha Group of Takimata can be called a hidden gem of Kyoto. For nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and those seeking peace of mind, it offers an unforgettable experience. Please spend a half to full day for a leisurely visit.
