Located in Yusa, Yamagata Prefecture, Ryuto-ji Temple is a historic temple quietly standing at the foot of Mt. Chokai. Once thriving as the academic head of the 33 lodgings for ascetic practices of Mt. Chokai, it took its current form after the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era. The temple still conveys its deep connection with the adjacent Omowake Shrine, making it a faith center of the region.
The Nio statues in front of the main hall are so unique that they make you do a double take. They are adorned with flashy aprons, resembling characters from anime. It's said that the design changes occasionally, so every visit might offer a new discovery.
Besides the main hall, the grounds feature a Kannon-do hall with an earthen structure. This hall enshrines a standing Eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu statue, also known as the 19th pilgrimage site of the Shonai 33 Kannon.
We recommend visiting the nearby Omowake Shrine as well. You can experience the remnants of the syncretic age of Shinto and Buddhism and the profound faith in Mt. Chokai.
Ryuto-ji is a temple where solemnity and friendliness coexist, offering a unique charm. The blend of a unique atmosphere, deep history, and a touch of modern humor will surely leave a lasting impression. Experience this special place born from the faith and nature of Mt. Chokai.
