The steam from ancient volcanic activity at the Owakudani still blackens chicken eggs. The eggs, packed in a metal cage, are enveloped by the sharp breath of geothermal heat, slowly undergoing a transformation. The eggs, retrieved after some time, have been reborn into a completely black form as if under a spell.
Traditionally, it is believed that by eating a black egg, one's lifespan can be extended by 7 years. This belief seems to be a manifestation of people's gratitude to the blessings of the volcano and their prayers for protection from disasters. When sprinkled with salt and put into the mouth, the smooth and creamy yolk spreads out, revealing a rich deliciousness.
Although production was temporarily halted due to volcanic activity in 2015, black eggs in Hakone continued to hold onto hope. Finally, in 2016, the long-awaited revival came. Even though it is by reservation, the opportunity to directly obtain this quiet gift from the volcano and to meet it can undoubtedly be an irreplaceable experience.
