Nestled quietly in the mountains of Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, Oyamazumi Shrine (Anashizuwari Hyouzu Shrine) is a place steeped in Japan's ancient history. Its establishment is said to date back to the 60th year of Emperor Sujin, and just by experiencing its long history, you are enveloped in a mysterious sensation of time swaying.
The three main halls enshrine Wakamitama-no-kami on the right, Oyamazumi-no-kami on the left, and Hyouzu-no-kami in the center. These deities are significant figures in Japanese mythology, especially Hyouzu-no-kami, who has been widely revered as the god of warfare.
Hyouzu-no-kami is said to be the nephew of Amaterasu, playing an important role in Japan’s ancient history. According to mythology, he was appointed to govern the area around present-day Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, due to his achievements in restoring peace.
The allure of Oyamazumi Shrine lies in its tranquil atmosphere. Unlike crowded famous shrines, here you can quietly confront yourself and experience a mystical space connecting back to ancient Japan.
The shrine’s grounds are beautifully harmonized with the surrounding nature. Particularly in autumn, it is renowned for its foliage, with the quiet beauty of leaves enhanced after rain.
Located a few hundred meters up the hill from Yamanobe no michi, the road is somewhat narrow, so caution is necessary when driving. There is parking space for 3-4 cars near the shrine, but it is advisable to use nearby parking lots during busy periods.
Oyamazumi Shrine (Anashizuwari Hyouzu Shrine) is truly a hidden gem of Nara. Its long history and tranquil atmosphere are perfect for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and calm their minds. If you want to delve into Japan's ancient history and have a mystical experience, this is a must-visit spot.
