Located in Yudanaka, Shinshu, Maruka Ryokan is a quaint inn renovated from a wooden old folk house, emanating the allure of the Showa era. Ascend the staircase and be greeted by the wooden latch lock on the door.
The rooms offer ample space for a leisurely stay. Sitting on the wide veranda, one can enjoy a moment of relaxation while gazing at the neighboring temple. In the evening, it feels like having the place to oneself, surrounded by the tranquility filled with the chirping of insects and the sound of the hot spring.
Breakfast is served in a separate room, designed for just one guest. Enjoy the simple taste of rice from an open window, overlooking the picturesque view. The pickles complement the rice well, and the small dessert of yogurt and muscat grapes is a delightful treat.
Operated by an elderly couple and their son, the inn may have some areas where cleanliness is not impeccable, yet, this is also part of its charm. The endearing hostess welcomes guests, creating a sense of reassurance and comfort, akin to returning to one's grandmother's home.
A short walk from the inn, there are free communal baths and foot baths for guests to use. After soaking in the hot spring, a stroll outside will provide a truly blissful experience.
