In a quiet corner of Kagoshima City lies Sekiyoshi Sluiceway, registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. This historic waterway is a masterpiece that gathered the pinnacle of civil engineering from the Meiji era, still maintaining its beautiful form today.
Sekiyoshi Sluiceway was constructed using the most advanced techniques of its time. Its intricate stonework and waterway design continue to astonish modern viewers. Here, you can tangibly feel the wisdom and efforts of our predecessors.
The area around the sluiceway showcases different expressions with each season. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom in full glory, while in summer, cool hydrangeas add color. Autumn sees the reflection of fall foliage on the water surface, creating a fantastical scenery.
On weekends and public holidays, local volunteer guides are available. Their friendly explanations, sometimes in the Kagoshima dialect, make it easy to understand the history and technical characteristics of the sluiceway.
The well-maintained walkways are perfect for a leisurely stroll. Surrounded by lush nature and accompanied by the sound of clear water, you can refresh both mind and body.
Sekiyoshi Sluiceway is about a 5-minute walk from the Sekiyoshi Product Shop. Due to the sloped path, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Additionally, to preserve the quiet environment, please be mindful of manners such as not speaking loudly.
Sekiyoshi Sluiceway is more than just a tourist spot. It is a living history, born from the efforts of our predecessors and harmonious coexistence with nature. Take your time to feel the flow of time alongside the gently flowing water.
