Kunouzan Toshogu Shrine, a symbol of Shizuoka City, is known as a shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Built with the pride of the Edo shogunate, this sacred place attracts many visitors with its historical significance and beautiful architectural style.
Although not as large as Nikko Toshogu Shrine, the shrine buildings of Kunouzan Toshogu are splendid and radiate a solemn atmosphere. The structures decorated with gold leaf and carvings are the epitome of Edo-period craftsmanship and aesthetics. Visitors can feel both the weight of history and artistic value.
There are two ways to access Kunouzan Toshogu Shrine:
I personally recommend visiting by ropeway, as it allows you to enjoy the scenery while conserving energy.
If you're lucky, you might encounter the limited-time nighttime special visit “Tenka Taihei.” The shrine illuminated with bamboo lights and lighting creates a fantastical atmosphere completely different from daytime.
Kunouzan Toshogu Shrine is a place where Japanese history, culture, and natural beauty harmoniously coexist. When visiting Shizuoka, consider spending a serene moment at this sacred site. Surrounded by the weight of history and breathtaking scenery, you'll feel rejuvenated both mentally and physically.
