Miyako Island is a small island floating in Matsushima Bay, Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture. Its unique shape, resembling a battleship anchored in the port, captivates visitors. This island, an artwork created by nature over long years, is one of the key elements that form the spectacular view of Matsushima.
Matsushima Bay has been cherished as one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views. Miyako Island, one of the more than 260 islands forming this beautiful scenery, has played an important role. In the Edo period, the poet Matsuo Basho was captivated by the beauty of Matsushima and incorporated it into his haiku.
