Sarasina Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Chikuma City, Nagano Prefecture. It was founded in the late 9th century and is known as one of the 11 shrines in the Sarashina District of Shinano Province listed in the Engishiki. It was formerly called "Wakamiya Hachimangu" and prospered as the center of faith for the local people.
When you step into the shrine precincts, you're enveloped in a majestic atmosphere. The worship hall and main shrine are built in the style of a three-bay nagare-zukuri, characterized by three kakashi trees and chigi. The shrine buildings, adorned in vermilion and black, evoke a sense of historical weight and mystery.
Sarasina Shrine enshrines Honadewake no Mikoto (Emperor Ojin), Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto (Empress Jingu), and Oosazaki no Mikoto (Emperor Nintoku). As a Hachiman shrine, it garners deep faith from the local people.
Within the precincts, there is a Hokke Tō from the second year of Eiwa (1378). Said to be a reverse memorial mound established by 45 local warriors who pledged loyalty to Prince Morinaga, the son of Emperor Go-Daigo, it conveys the spirit of the warriors of that time.
Sarasina Shrine is surrounded by rich nature. Especially in spring, the precincts are adorned with blooming katakuri flowers, creating a breathtaking scene where the shrine's majesty and natural beauty harmonize perfectly.
Sarasina Shrine is a mystical space where history, faith, and nature beautifully blend together. How about quietly and profoundly savoring the atmosphere of this sacred place that has been passed down for over a thousand years?
