Togakushi Shrine Chusha is a sacred place nestled in the rich nature of Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. As one of the five shrines of Togakushi, it has attracted people’s faith since ancient times. Walking along the approach lined with giant cedar trees over 800 years old, you'll feel as if you’ve entered another world, enveloped in a mystical atmosphere.

The Impressive Three Cedars and Majestic Shrine Buildings

During the pilgrimage, the first thing that catches your eye is the three 800-year-old cedars. Their overwhelming presence inspires awe in visitors. Upon reaching the shrine buildings, you will be welcomed by the sacred 700-year-old tree. The ceiling of the worship hall features a magnificent painting of a dragon, leaving you breathless with its high artistic value.

“Sazare Waterfall” with Soothing Pure Water

Right next to the shrine buildings is the “Sazare Waterfall”, where pure spring water continuously flows. On hot summer days, the sound of this water brings a pleasant coolness. This place, also dedicated to the Dragon God, will refresh both your body and mind.

Access and Tips for Visiting

Chusha has three free parking lots available. Additionally, public transportation access is convenient with a nearby bus stop. If you plan to visit all five Togakushi shrines, I recommend planning with plenty of time and physical stamina. Generally, the route starts from Chusha, then proceeds to Okusha, Kuzuryusha, Hinomiya Shrine, and Hogosha Shrine.

After visiting the shrine, why not enjoy the famous soba noodles at one of the surrounding Togakushi soba restaurants? Paired with local dishes made from local ingredients, it’s a great way to relieve the fatigue from your shrine visit.
