The Yanagawa Castle Ruins are located in the center of Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Built by the Kamachi clan at the end of the Sengoku period, it later became the residence of the renowned general Muneshige Tachibana. Today, part of the site is on a school campus, so it does not remain in its entirety, but moats and waterways still preserve the essence of the past.
The most distinguishing feature of Yanagawa Castle is its surrounding moats and waterways. Once facing the sea, the castle had a defense system that utilized water transport. The network of waterways throughout the town vividly expresses the charm of Yanagawa as a “City of Water.” The view of the town from the canal cruise is truly a symbol of Yanagawa.
A focal point in the castle ruins is the site of the castle keep. Standing here, one can imagine the former grandeur of the castle. Additionally, the remaining stone walls made of granite are notable, reflecting the regional geology with their intriguing structure.
After visiting the castle ruins, why not try Yanagawa’s specialty, steamed eel rice? Enjoying local flavors while strolling through the quaint castle town streets adds delight to the journey.
It’s about a 15-minute walk from the nearest JR Yanagawa Station. There are also tourist loop buses available within the city, making travel convenient.
Although the full view of the Yanagawa Castle Ruins cannot be seen, combining it with the surrounding waterways and streets allows you to immerse yourself in the ambiance of the old castle town.
