Park • Tarumae, Tomakomai, Hokkaido 059-1265, Japan
Tarumae Garou is a treasure trove located in the western part of Tomakomai City, Hokkaido. Only about a 30-minute drive from the city center, this site is truly a hidden scenic spot.
This valley, formed by the eruption of Mt. Tarumae in 1667, boasts a unique terrain shaped by the erosion of pyroclastic flow deposits over many years. The nearly vertical cliffs are covered with more than 60 types of moss, creating an enchanting scene like a green curtain.
Tarumae Garou is not just a scenic spot. It hosts a variety of plants such as the rare Myriosigma and large broom moss, making it a valuable research field for botanists. Additionally, the area is popular among bird watchers as birds like the brown dipper and white wagtail can also be observed here.
While the beauty can be enjoyed all year round, fresh greenery season (May-June) and autumn (October) are especially recommended. Visiting during seasons where the mosses' green is particularly vibrant will provide an even more breathtaking experience.
Tarumae Garou is off the beaten track from the typical Hokkaido tourist course, but it is a place worth visiting. The landscape, akin to a masterpiece created by nature over time, will surely leave a deep impression on your heart. When visiting around Tomakomai, be sure to venture into this hidden spot to experience unexpected emotions and the profound depth of Hokkaido's nature.
