On Miyako Island, the main island of the Miyako Islands, the Kakinokoshiyama Ruins of the ancient village remain. This is a precious historic site with traces of a village from the 14th to 15th century Ryukyu Kingdom era, preserving the signs of life at that time.
The ruins standing near the top of Kakinokoshiyama are quiet spaces with thatched buildings. It allows one to remember the appearance of the ancient village and reminisce about the ancient times. The light pouring in through the surrounding trees seems as if it is coming from beyond time itself.
The ruins still bear traces of the rituals performed by the village people. Offerings are regularly placed on the altar, and the reverence for the spirits continues to be passed down. It is a place where one can reflect on history and also experience the ritual culture of Miyako, making it a place filled with multi-layered charm.
Due to the need to traverse through thickets, it is advisable to wear long-sleeved clothing and carry insect repellent spray. Also, as a site for rituals, it is important to maintain a quiet demeanor. While reflecting on Miyako's history, let us also respect the culture that has been carefully preserved.
