Located in the quiet pastoral landscape of Minami Tanba City in Kyoto, Bunkaku-do is a place associated with Bunkaku Shonin, a high priest from the Kamakura period. In a turbulent era that transitioned from the Heian period to the warrior period, Bunkaku Shonin faced many court nobles and military commanders, and his dynamism and unique persona endeared him to the people.
In the past, this area had poor water management, and it is said that Bunkaku Shonin supervised the excavation of waterways by the villagers. Even now, the waterways where carp swim remain, and the local people remember Bunkaku Shonin as a benefactor. In a small gazebo blending with the green scenery, one can spend leisurely time while reminiscing about the history.
In his youth, Bunkaku Shonin met a tragic end due to excessive affection for a married woman, displaying a devoted and unique side. His life is depicted in works such as the Tale of the Heike and also became ukiyo-e by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. By visiting the history-adorned Bunkaku-do, one can reflect on the life of this extraordinary monk filled with light and shadow.
