Hidden Gem of Kyoto: Rich Chicken Paitan Ramen

Although Kyoto is home to many delicious ramen shops, Menya Mitarashi can be considered a hidden gem among them. The shop is well known for its rich chicken paitan ramen.

Rich Soup Packed with Chicken Umami

The greatest charm of Menya Mitarashi lies in the richness of its soup. The soup, packed with the umami of chicken, boasts a richness that almost feels suffocating. However, it's not overwhelming, and it is delicious enough to be finished in one go.

Wonderful Harmony of Ingredients

In addition to the rich soup, the ramen comes with half-boiled eggs, juicy chashu, meatballs, and wood ear mushrooms. The flavor and texture of each ingredient complement the rich soup perfectly.

Unique Flavor Changing Items

The shop offers unique flavor changing items such as black shichimi and sansho pepper. When added to the rich soup, they provide a different and elegant flavor compared to the ordinary shichimi.

Consideration for Women's Convenience

Paper aprons and hair ties are provided, showing consideration for women. Additionally, there are photos of the ramen next to the ticket machine, making it easy to place an order.

Menya Mitarashi's rich chicken paitan ramen can be said to be a representative hidden gem of Kyoto. It is a must-try for local ramen enthusiasts.

I've been on a hunt for chicken ramen (I love ramen but I actually haven't had much chicken broth style). So on the way back to the hotel saw this place and had to pop in. We had an extra large serve of noodles to be dipped in chicken broth, extra large ramen (Chuka style of fish, chicken and beef broth) and gyoza. We shared between three. To be honest I wasn't expecting much as the place looks a bit tired but.... very tasty 😋 ramen. Both the chicken and Chuka broth were so flavoursome, the bamboo shoots were tasty with a nice crunch, the soft boiled egg was awesome, the chashu (pork) was melt in the mouth goodness. I prefer noodles on the firmer side, and these noodles had a good texture and spring in the bite. Gyoza were ok, but I would give them a miss next time. The menu and ticket machine are in English and Japanese so ordering is easy. It is an open kitchen and the cook was hypervigilant in cleaning up during cooking...which makes you feel safe as a diner. It has counter seating. This place is worth a try if you are nearby

another ramen restaurant i tried in kyoto. it's a very simple casual shop. tried its chicken based ramen, the soup base was very good, thick and rich chicken flavour. the chicken slides were tender too. together with chicken meat ball and a half boiled egg, the full chicken course was very satisfying. a good lunch to recharge myself.

I found this humble cute place by chance when I was wondering around at 22:30 (so many places were already closed )and what a great surprise it was ! I had the creamy Miso based chicken ramen - not only I was so happy to find at last a chicken Ramen (4 kinds!!, not just pork) , but also it was rich full of flavors and different textures (chicken chunks , chicken balls, chicken (kind of) dumplings , eggs and more ! The staff was sooo welcoming and nice , helped me with all my questions about the food (and culture!) and made me feel so welcome ! Just a minute walk from Shijo Dori . Made my day !!:)

I think the rating doesn’t do this place justice. We stumbled upon this Ramen restaurant and before getting inside we checked the reviews which made us a bit worried. However, we decided to give it a chance and didn’t regret it. The food was delicious and the service was friendly. It’s cool to see the food being made and overall the environment is cosy and authentic.
