Kurama-dera Temple is located on the mountainside of Mount Kurama in the northwest part of Kyoto, with a history of over 1200 years. Mount Kurama has been a cultural mountain beloved by scholars and literati since the Heian period, and is a historic place that appears in The Tale of Genji.
It is said that Kurama-dera Temple was founded in the Nara period by the disciple of Ganjin Wajo, Kanjo Shonin, a high priest. During the Heian period, it received the patronage of the Fujiwara clan and enshrined Bishamonten and Kannon as the main deities.
In the medieval period, it was known as the dojo where Minamoto no Yoshitsune trained his warrior monks, and was also known as the mountain of martial arts. In the Edo period, it was beloved by the people as a god of fortune and became known as a famous cherry blossom spot. With these diverse historical layers, Kurama-dera Temple has established its own unique 'Kurama School of Buddhism'.
There are various attractions scattered throughout the temple grounds. In front of the main hall, there is a power spot where it is said that cosmic energy is poured, attracting people who want to experience spiritual power.
Additionally, there are historic sub-temples, a water koto cave, and places associated with the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's training, offering new discoveries with each visit. It is convenient to reach Kurama-dera Temple by Keihan Electric Railway. There are routes to walk up from the station and routes to use the cable car. It is also popular as a hiking course, with the route from Kibun-guchi being recommended.
