The sea hell, famous as the entrance to Beppu's Hell Tour, was formed by a hot spring born from the eruption of Mt. Tsurumidake 1200 years ago. The steam rising from the cobalt blue lake is truly a mysterious sight that allows you to experience the energy of the Earth. The hot spring component, sulfuric acid iron, dyes the water surface a beautiful blue, delighting the eyes of the beholder.
At the sea hell, visitors can enjoy various experiences such as foot baths and shrine visits. The souvenir shop offers a variety of local specialties unique to Beppu, such as the Gokuraku manju (heavenly steamed buns) and Hell Steamed Pudding. Occasionally, the booming voice of the guide may be a bit annoying, but if you consider it as a kind of hell experience, it might be interesting.
The sea hell is the starting point for hell tours, often with long lines to purchase a common viewing ticket. It is recommended to visit with ample time. However, the adjacent Chinoike Jigoku (blood pond hell) also offers a breathtaking view, so if you have the time and budget, it is recommended to explore not only the sea hell but also multiple hells. You should be able to experience the bustling atmosphere of Beppu, crowded with tourists from around the world.
