The "Seven Lucky Bell" standing in the center of Iiyama city is a proud cultural heritage of this region. The bell, once placed on the platform of the old Iiyama station, was moved to its present location with the relocation of the new station. When the bell is struck, the powerful sound resonates throughout the city, believed to bring happiness to the people passing by.
Generally, temple bells cannot be rung freely, but this bell can be rung by anyone at any time. However, continuous ringing should be avoided. The sound of the bell is expected to bring happiness to both the striker and the recipient.
Right next to the bell, there are two Nio statues that used to be enshrined in Zenkoji Temple. Made by the Buddhist sculptors of Iiyama, these dignified works are outstanding. While they may appear unbalanced, looking up from below reveals a three-dimensional and majestic presence. The landscape woven by the bell and the Nio statues is a precious place where the history and tradition of Iiyama resonate.
Currently, individual bell ringing is restricted out of consideration for the nearby residents. However, it is said that several events are held each year where you can actually ring the bell. Why not come and feel the sound of happiness echoing around you?
The Seven Lucky Bell is a treasure cherished by the people of Iiyama. This place, where you can experience a memorable and unique landscape and sound, is definitely worth a visit.
